Julie Wyman’s 2012 documentary film STRONG! (75 min, HD) continues her visual investigation of cultural and media constructions of health, weight, gender and body image. STRONG! premiered to sold-out houses and standing ovations at Silverdocs 2012, screened in theaters nationally, and was broadcast nationally as the closing film of the 10th season of PBS’s Emmy award winning series, Independent Lens, where it won the series’ Audience Award. Wyman’s work has been awarded support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Independent Television Service and the Creative Capital Foundation.

Her previous works, Buoyant (2005) and A Boy Named Sue (2000), are distributed by Women Make Movies, and have aired on Showtime, LOGO TV, and at venues including MoMA, the Walker Art Center, the Wexner Art Center, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, the National Film Theater in London, and at festivals including Mill Valley Film Festival, Taos Talking Pictures, South by Southwest, Women in the Director’s Chair, Mix (Sao Paolo), Out-in-Africa, (Cape Town), Queer Screen (Sydney). A Boy Named Sue won a Sappho award for Best Documentary 2000 and was nominated for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s Best Documentary Media Award.
